Hi and welcome to 2-Minute Tuesday. On today’s show I talk about why it’s important to take some risks if you want to improve your confidence. And I’ll give you some quick tips on how to go about doing it.

Resources:

The 5 questions I mention in the podcast are…

1 What’s stopping me from doing it?
2 If I did it anyway, what would be the best possible outcome?
3 What effect would it have on me, once I’d done it?
4 What would be the very worst outcome if things went wrong?
5 How likely is it, that that worst outcome is gonna happen?

If you have any questions, or comments, please leave them in the comments section below.

Hello and welcome to 2-minute Tuesday. The quick tip show from the everyday confidence podcast. I’m your host, Steve George and today’s topic is about Taking some risks.

So, taking a risk. Obviously when I say take some risks, I don’t mean physical risks like cliff diving, or extreme skiing or powerboat racing, things like that. But, what I mean, is things that at the moment, when you think about doing them, you’re a bit fearful about how you’ll cope, or whether you’ll fail. Now, that fear could be that you’re a bit afraid of looking foolish, or you might mess it up, or maybe you’ll feel too uncomfortable while you’re doing it. So, you keep putting it off. Whatever it is for you, you need to make a commitment to bite the bullet and step outside of your comfort zone. Even if it’s just by a little bit.

Obviously, sometimes when you take a risk, you’re inviting the possibility that you might fail in some way. But, don’t not to let that stop you from trying. It’s okay if you fail, as long as you take the time to learn something from it, so you can make a better go of it next time.

Nobody goes through their life without some failure and again, that’s okay. Humans begin their journey into failure from a very young age. How many times does a baby try to walk and fall flat on their face before they actually get it? As an adult too, you’ve got to expect failure as well. Nobody gets everything right all the time.

If you want to build up your confidence, you’re gonna have to occasionally do things things you don’t really want to do. You’re going to have to take a risk. And I know that can be difficult, so I’m going to give you a couple of ideas to get you started;

Firstly welcome opportunities. So, for example, try picking one day a week when you say yes, to every opportunity that comes up that day. It’s much harder to get worried about things that might go wrong, if you’ve already decided that you’re gonna say yes to everything. And, once you’ve agreed to do it, it’s too late then to get out off it.

Second, think about some risks you’ve taken in the past. What happened when you tried them? How did they work out for you? Were you successful? If you weren’t, what did you learn from the failure? Because remember as long as you got some feedback from it, it wasn’t really a failure.

And thirdly, think of two or three things you’d really like to do, but up to now you haven’t had the courage to take the leap. And then once you’ve done that, ask yourself these 5 questions for each one…

1 What’s stopping me from doing it?
2 If I did it anyway, what would be the best possible outcome?
3 What effect would it have on me, once I’d done it?
4 What would be the very worst outcome if things went wrong?
5 How likely is it, that that worst outcome is gonna happen?

Once you’ve thought about it logically for a couple of minutes, you’ll find that the worst outcome, is really unlikely to happen. It’s just your subconscious mind protecting you from the unknown. And the benefits can be immense. So, now you realise it’s probably not gonna be that bad, go do it!

The longer you put these things off for, the harder it’s gonna be to ever do them, because you’re reinforcing your negative beliefs every time you put these things off.

Okay, that’s it for this episode. Those five questions will be available with the show notes over on the podcast page of the website, that’s theskillfulmind.com/podcast/29. Enjoy the rest of your day and I’ll speak to you soon. Bye for now.
