We all know that social anxiety is a pain in the ass. It stops us doing the things we’d really like to do, as well as things that could make a huge difference to our lives. This article will give you a boost when you’re feeling crappy about an up-coming event, or situation.

The Problem

Anxious ManWhen you’re in a situation that causes you anxiety, you immediately think about the downside. The nasty ‘fear’ chemicals start flowing and you quickly become a wreck.

In times like these, it’s difficult to think of anything other than the devistation that’ll follow. But, there is a way to help soothe the immediate over-reaction.

We all have things we’re naturally good at. We also have things we just can’t do. In between though, there’s things that we could probably do, if we had the right skills, or motivation. (Psychologist Lev Vygotsky studied students and called this area in between, the ‘zone of proximal development‘ (ZPD.)

It’s this middle area that this tip will help. It’s very simple to construct, very easy to apply and can be hugely beneficial.

The ‘Fix’

Firstly, spend a few minutes thinking about one, or two scary situations that would be great to overcome.

Once you’ve done that, get yourself a small piece of card. A 3 x 5 index card is ideal.

On one side of the card, list 5 benefits of smashing your fear in these situations. That’s 5 reasons, why taking a small step into your ‘ZPD’, would be so beneficial.

When you’ve finished that, spin the card over and write down 5 reasons, why staying the same is unacceptable. eg; what you could miss out on, what happiness you’ll forgo, etc.

Lastly, and most important, carry the card with you.

Whenever your faced with the prospect of having to face these, or similar situations, get your card out and remind yourself why you want to do it.

Why it Helps

It’s really hard to remeber these things when you’re stressed about the situation. But, having them with you all the time, means you can remind yourself easily.

Anxiety lowered - confidence builtClearly, it won’t do much to help with the anxiety of the situation, but sometimes just having a strong ‘why’ is enough to get started. And there’s plenty of articles here to help with your confidence.

Give it a try. It’s 10 minutes out of your day and could change your life 🙂

Remember to Be Brave.
