If you’ve set yourself a resolution, or if you’re thinking of setting one, this post is for you.

Well, here we are at the start of a New year. Hopefully, this one will bring us some sort of normality.

Over the next few posts, we’ll go through the processes involved in setting and achieving any goal. But for today, I’ll take you through a process that’s usually overlooked, but I would argue is just as important…

Knowing why you want to achieve it and being fully aware of the consequences.

So, let’s get started.

Why is finding your resolution’s why so important?

You’ll often hear people saying that setting and achieving your goals, or resolution is a great way to build confidence. And,  indirectly, it is. Because, it’s the journey to completing them that helps to build your confidence.

As I’m sure you know from previous attempts, resolutions are rarely kept for very long. The problem, is that very few people can stay motivated for long enough to keep going. In fact, in a survey carried out in 2018 by the Statistic Brain Research Institute, they noted that 92% of all resolutions set, fail. And that 80% of those, fail within 6 weeks. Also, the majority of that 80% have failed by January 15th!

So, if we going to succeed, we need to plan properly. Have you heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”? Let’s not plan to fail 🙂

Setting a plan for success

It’s important to remember, that it’s not the achieving of a grand goal that brings confidence. It’s collecting a sequence of small wins that does that. Every time you do something that’s a success, your confidence grows a bit.

Steps to achieve your resolutionAnd that’s why in the coming posts, I’ll explain how to not only set a large goal, but also lots of tiny goals along the way.

But for now, let’s give you a very compelling reason to achieve all your goals.

Whatever the goal, or resolution you’re thinking if setting, the outcome you want will be something that’s emotional, not physical.

Imagine for the sake of argument that the goal you’ve set, is to own a new car. Seems like a fairy ordinary thing to want, right?

But, what if I told you that the car is just a vehicle, for what you really want (pun intended).

If you were to break down what having that car would give you, you’d find an emotion. It might be, excitement, freedom, pride, or any number of other emotions. But either way, what you really want is that emotion and a car is a way you can see of getting it.

So, to give you the best possible chance of achieving it, you should ask yourself these 6 questions:

  • Why do you want this goal? What will it give you?
  • What would it mean to you personally, if you accomplished this goal?-How would you feel?
  • How would you feel if you didn’t accomplish your goals?
  • What sort of person will you need to become to reach this goal?
  • How would your life change if you accomplish this goal?
  • How will this goal impact your family and those you love?

Answering these questions is almost like a super power. It’s one of the best strategies for goal setting – more than techniques, etc.
